Q: What was your itinerary for the trip to Paris?
A: First, I travelled to Paris from Toronto where I met Melissa (the CEO of Krippit) and got acclimated to the new environment. During the first few days, we went to Station F where we worked on planning for the Who’s Next show and I got to tour around Paris. Then, we went to Düsseldorf, Germany for the Gallery Shoes International Trade Show. While we weren’t showcasing at this show, it was a great experience to talk to the various vendors at the event and gain an understanding of how the Who’s Next show would be set up. After travelling to Düsseldorf we went back to Paris where we prepared for Who’s Next. This show was very important for Krippit, seeing as there are lots of buyers and agents who attend and look for potential clients to work with. Showcasing at this event was very busy and exciting, as we made lots of connections with buyers in France and Europe while at the show. A few days after the show, Melissa and I travelled to Nice for a few days where we took product photography and enjoyed the beautiful views. After going to Nice, it was time to return to Toronto.
Q: What was your most memorable experience in France?
A: My most memorable experience would have to be either going to the Louvre or looking at the Mediterranean Sea in Nice. Going to Paris I was excited to see the artwork in the Louvre, and it did not disappoint! I enjoyed the sarcophaguses and sculptures they had on display. In Nice, I thoroughly loved the Mediterranean Sea and the view of the glistening water.
Q: How was the Who’s Next show?
A: The Who’s Next show was an amazing experience for Krippit. While preparing for the show was very stressful, we were able to meet many buyers and brands that are interested in our products. I was taken aback by how large the venue was where the show took place, and how many brands were showcasing alongside Krippit. It was great to connect with so many agents and buyers, and experience one of the fashion industry’s largest trade shows.
Q: How has this trip impacted your outlook on life?
A: This trip gave me the experience to travel to France alone, and seize opportunities that come my way. During the trip I was given tasks that required me to try and speak French and communicate with others in a foreign language which was out of my comfort zone. Completing these tasks allowed me to grow as a person and develop my French language skills.
Q: What were the challenges of this trip?
A: Some of the challenges I experienced were planning for the Who’s Next show and communicating with native French speakers. Planning for Who’s Next was challenging because we needed to make sure everything was perfect since it was a very important event. This meant that we had to have our display planned out, email our contacts who were coming to visit our booth and have our takeaway materials ready in a short amount of time. Communicating in French was a challenge for me, seeing as I am not fluent in French and had a hard time understanding what people were saying. Over time, I started to understand more, however this was still a large challenge during the trip.
Q: How is the fashion community different in Paris versus Toronto?
A: The fashion industry is much larger in Paris than it is in Toronto, meaning that there are more opportunities to meet people who work with large brands and network with more individuals who work in the industry. I found that there were many opportunities to meet designers from around Europe who were interested in Krippit, and consumers who were fashion-oriented and interested in our products.
Q: What are your overall thoughts on this experience?
A: Overall, I greatly enjoyed my trip to France. It was amazing to experience so many events and showcase Krippit in Europe. While travelling to Paris, Düsseldorf and Nice, I experienced so many incredible opportunities and I am very thankful to Krippit for bringing me along for this journey.
It is wonderful to learn about Emily’s journey to France and the amazing experience she had. To keep up with Krippit’s adventures, be sure to follow us @krippit3d on Instagram and @krippit1 on Twitter.

Q: What inspired you to become an author?
A: I began writing when I was in high school, I wrote a beautiful hand-written book entitled A Young Woman’s Journey to Her Heritage when I was 17. I had envisioned it also being a film, but unfortunately the 350-page book burned in our home which was part of the Firestorm of 1991. Soon after that, I was bedridden for a complicated pregnancy. As an extremely active person, it was the biggest challenge I had every experienced. We did well, and I knew I had to share our practical tips with others who found themselves in the same situation. I wrote The Bed Rest Survival Guide in 1998, and a 2nd edition in 2013. Writing is a wonderful way to clarify thoughts, and invite a large audience to share in the unique wisdom being discussed.
Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: I’m athletically oriented, so I workout twice a day. I love the sunshine, and I love fresh air, but most of all I love the free-to-feel-relaxed feeling afterwards. I like to be as productive as I can be throughout the day, but that usually means writing on the computer, which is stationary. I insist on personal and professional balance, and I enjoy time with family and friends.
Q: In what ways do you hope that the book A Whole Person Makes The Whole World Better inspires readers?
A: I hope my readers are moved by the “new" whole: personal, social, and environmental responsibility, and that only through awareness, responsibility, and action - can we make a positive difference locally and globally. Most people are ‘aware’ of the extreme challenges of humanity and the environment, but they don’t care enough to take small steps everyday that over time becomes real change. Awareness and care of self is where change starts, it then moves outwards to others and to the environment. My hope is that the book’s message is bold enough - that with AWARENESS, RESPONSIBILITY and ACTION individuals can make a difference.
Q: How did you maintain personal well-being as a professional athlete?
A: Some people would say that being an extreme endurance athlete and a mother is overly stressful, but I found it to be the perfect balance. I loved caring for my family, being involved with daughters’ activities, and having time to train for my goals and high expectations. I never let the energy commitment for sport dominate in a way that I didn’t have time to love my family and friends, or do outside activities such as my jewelry design work or writing books.
Q: In a time where division is embedded in society how do you plan on uniting humanity, as mentioned in your book?
A: I hope the simple but powerful messages throughout the book moves people regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic background, or geographic location as I believe every human being especially when informed and inspired, can step up and make a difference. When this happens, we will each benefit while the whole planet heals.
Q: What is your design process for making jewelry?
A: I collect high quality gems, pearls, stones, and metals from around the world, then design strands to be worn together in unpredictable combinations so that a special one - of - a - kind aesthetic occurs - that is ultimately breathtaking when worn. I also have an arm of my company called RE-FORESTE + HILS DESIGNWORKS which revives people’s old and unworn pieces through new redesigns that are worn and loved forever.
Q: How has your quest for sustainability impacted your daily life?
A: Everyday, I teach myself and others how to live better and inspire others through awareness, responsibility, and taking action knowing that there’s a positive ripple effect. I ask myself to drive less, to stop using plastic, to eliminate paper towels, to plant my own vegetables now that it’s Spring, to recycle my clothing by donating them, and to be a role model by sharing inspiring ideas in person with others or on social media. I spend a large portion of everyday creating workbooks for high school and young students.

The Drapers Awards are a United Kingdom based awards ceremony that
celebrates everything footwear related. The awards ceremony holds an audience
of more than 400 industry professionals, and provides a platform for brands to
showcase their achievements. Some of the other brands nominated in the
category of Sustainable Initiative of the Year are ALDO, Hunter, Sperry and Veja.
It truly is an honour to be showcased alongside these major companies.
At Krippit, it feels incredible to be considered for this award and have our
hard work recognized. The ceremony has been pushed from June to September
of this year due to the coronavirus, and will be held at the Grosvenor House in
London. Once again, we are really thankful for this opportunity, and we are vey
excited to attend the awards ceremony.
We are truly thankful to everyone who supports our brand and believes in
us. We would not be nominated for this award without our customers believing in
the product and backing our company. Being nominated for this award is very
special moment for our brand, and we truly cannot thank you enough. At Krippit,
we are very excited for what the future holds for our company and we hope that
you are too!

]]>This month, Krippit was given the opportunity to showcase at London Fashion Week! We give thanks to TFI for providing us with such a marvellous opportunity to be in London Fashion Week!
Our event was hosted by the Canadian Embassy, and our events took place at Canada House. We got to display our products, and have a model walk in the Canadian Fashion Designer Show. The event was an excellent opportunity to gain brand recognition and meet industry professionals who are interested in our ideas.
On day 2 of our London Fashion week experience, we had scheduled individual meetings with people who liked our brand. This was a great networking opportunity, and we got to show off our products to more people.
Throughout the week, we got to meet many industry professionals who provided us with valuable information on the fashion industry, and our business. This was really interesting because we gained information about the industry that we never knew before.
Overall, we had an amazing time at London Fashion Week, and this experience was truly memorable. We want to thank everyone who came by our booth at Canada House, and everyone who took an interest in our products. We hope to see you with your Krippits on!
We wanted to share with you what we have been up to in the past few months and what we plan on doing in the future.
Firstly, as seen in a previous newsletter we were at the Queen’s Plate June 28th. Krippit was a vendor, allowing us to sell our products to everyone that walked by. The Queen’s Plate was an amazing experience, and we loved interacting with our customers face to face.
On July 8th, Krippit was honoured to be a part of the PitchToCityHall event taking place at City Hall in downtown Toronto. We were able to meet many investors and other small businesses while working at our booth. The Krippit team had a great time talking to everyone and getting to explain how our product is different from everything else on the market.
We have an upcoming fireside chat August 20 2019, at the Mars Boutique! This will take place during the evening, where we will have many interesting discussions and be able to talk directly to our customers. The Address for the event is 112 Ossington St. Toronto, and tickets will be available shortly.
A major accomplishment of Krippit is that we were chosen to be part of the Select Portfolio program with Founders Institute! This means that out of all the graduates from Founders Institute, Krippit and a few other businesses were specially chosen to take part in this new endeavour. This will be an exciting experience for Krippit, and we cannot wait to see what this new program has to offer.
Here at Krippit, we are very excited to see what the future holds for our business, and we thank everyone for your continued support in this journey.
As a startup business, it can be challenging to turn an idea into reality. Thats why we have compiled a list of helpful tips for businesses and founders when going through the journey of starting their company.
The first tip is networking. This is very important for all business owners because it allows you to meet people who can potentially invest in your idea. Even if you don’t get an investor from networking, you have still gained valuable contacts that can help you in the future.
The next tip is listen to the consumers. This is important because they are the ones who will spend their money on the product. If they have suggestions or comments about your product, listen and change to make them satisfied.
The next tip is time management. Being an organized business owner is extremely important because it keeps your plans on track and prevents procrastination. As well, arriving on time for meetings with investors shows initiative and makes you look prepared.
The next tip is being able to adapt to changing times. With the rapid integration of technology within society, it is important for your business to keep up. Using the newest technology, or integrating technology into your retail store will keep you one step ahead of your competitors.
The final tip is to pitch to as many people as possible. This is extremely important because you never know who will want to invest in your idea, or who will be willing to support your business venture. Sometimes the best support comes from the most unexpected person.
We hope all of these tips informed you, and gave you good insight into the world of business. Thank you for reading this article, and good luck on your ventures.

]]>Dana [Founder] (left) and Malak [Master Artisan] (right) in Shatila refugee camp
Tight-Knit Syria a big dream and inspiration that has aided multiple women in Syria make a living and feel empowered through their work. Dana's inspiration started with one small girl who showed fascination over her knitted bag and showed her knitted project to Dana from donated wool. That sparked a light in her soul and started Tight-Knit Syria and after 5 years of hard work and continuing her project and women she inspired has grown. Her inspiration and story about her journey have made an amazing impact on the community here in Toronto and Syria. I had an amazing chance to interview her about her progress with her project Tight-Knit Syria.
What kept you motivated for the past 5 years?
What keeps me motivated is occasionally going back to the vision of why I started the whole project. When times are tough or feel like the project is not picking up fast enough it's because there is something bigger coming your way. Tip on staying motivated is to look back at your progress and reflect on all the things you've done. It is important that you remind yourself of these things or else you'll lose the motivation to move forward. Plus I suggest sharing your story and talking to people about your idea because it helps make the vision of your business clearer and how you can execute your plan better.
women at work (Designing patterns)
How do you get people onboard and stay committed to your ideas?
Getting people on board with my ideas was easy for me. When I tell my story and share my goals it inspires people to go along with my vision for Tight-Knit Syria. For it is a human to human story and it's much easier to connect with them and inspire them. The most difficult thing to do is to make a tangible platform that makes it easier for people to get involved with the project. This makes it difficult to maintain people interested and involved in what I do.
Are you planning any events or campaigns in 2019?
I am planning something but it not formalized yet. I will say however that events and campaigns have helped this project grow bigger than before. They have helped spread the story of Tight-Knit Syria. The biggest event I held in 2017 and it was called 'But Syriaously'. It was out of my comfort zone but it really helped bring people together and new people to our event to learn about our cause. So I will most definitely host another event again just to spread the word about Tight-Knit Syria.
Malak choosing yarn
Are you planning on expanding your product line?
Well, I would like to expand our fashion line with more knitted products from our artisans to sell in our community. We are collecting donated yarn and reusing it to make our product. We want to make an eco-friendly product and build a better community with our product line as we expand. We're building networks with other startups with similar goals and teaming up with them to diversify the project.
How are women getting the help they need from this project?
We collect donated wool from people and from events and we give it to them and they make the product and we buy the product they made upfront. So that they won't have to wait for someone to buy it to get paid and sustain a living in the tough conditions they are in. This project helps ease their minds, some of our artisan find this meditative and relaxing to do plus helps them earn money to support their families.
Finally, do you have any suggestions for new smaller startups?
It takes time and patience and keeps yourself motivated at all time even during the most difficult times. When things get tough don't ponder for a solution on your own. When you talk to people the problem will seem much smaller than it should be. Work with other startups with similar goals with you. Not only will it help you, but it will also help them and it will empower both companies. This will build a stronger eco-system for startups and smaller projects trying to grow.
When it comes to social media it's better to have 200 dedicated followers that support your cause and sticks with you all the way versus 20000 followers who aren't really involved in what you do. Your interaction with your audience has higher traction with smaller following number versus a giant following. It's okay if social media is not for you, social media is not for everyone. Like if you're selling a huge amount of special paper for crafts, and only have 3 followers. You're still selling paper and making a profit, and you don't need social media to sell the paper.
Getting to know Dana was an inspiration and we hope she can be an inspiration to you too. I can tell you personally talking to her made me feel motivated to conquer difficulties with ease. If you wish to help her with her journey you may contact her via email. If you wish to learn more about her amazing project click here to visit her website.

Female Founders Unite!
I had the honor to learn from the only other female founder, Erin Bogdanski! I can't wait to learn more over the next few weeks, from this extremely well accomplished Silicon Valley founder of THERA Inc. A mental health startup.
Founder's Day
The event took place at Fiverr's head office in NYC. This was a "safe place" opportunity to test and receive constructive criticism of our pitch. We've always known that one of the biggest challenges of doing a pitch is knowing your audience. Every audience is different. I found that whenever I explained krippit to a developer or a marketing person - different messaging is perceived.
The event audience was very appreciative towards our 3D printed NFC chips with the possibility of authentication, including how the platform would be built and sourced. Many enjoyed learning about our licensing problem and the solution approaches we applied ourselves. By including a photo of our Form 2 3D printer, many more people in the audience expressed interest about the process and concept for our agile solution development.
Recap Event: Kickoff - New Q4 Accelerator Cohort at Founder Night
A conversation about what's ahead in tech, business and the startup world. Meet founders, mentors and technologists in NYC.
Mark Gold highlighted the system of "offering" to help influencers solve problems, before presenting your "ask". The discussion also highlighted the NYC ecosystem, celebrating small wins in the startup journey before hitting the big win, plus hosting and attending events to become associated with specific brands/industries.

Krippit sparks curiosity at NYC's Rockefeller Center during NYC's Fashion Week. Revamping our marketing campaign to keep customers engaged. Shall we pivoting our business model? What's the best use of our time and money, both being limited resources, for innovating new fashion wearable products?
]]>While waiting for my Uber outside NYC’s Rockefeller, I caught a lady looking at my shoes from one eye, as I was looking down at my app. Another lady approached and asked me "Where did you get your shoes"? I said these are Ferragamo. And the heel protectors, that's krippit. That's what I make. She paused. The first lady came over to me. She did not mean to stare, but she thought that she had missed out on Ferragamo's next season collection. Once I started handing out one booklet, and just like that a semi-crowd of on-lookers was drawn in. Not only did I miss my Uber, I also ran out of booklets! I ended up having insightful conversations with my target market. Although I think they will need to be reminded or presented with some type of a call to action, I realized krippit needs to pivot its marketing campaign. This includes revamping our follow up, tracking and engagement with potential customers in the future.
The beauty of being in an accelerator is having a safe zone for really testing out a "pivot" idea. Under the advice of 2020 Startup mentors, like me, they envision krippit beyond what we make now. As a fashion wearable product (hardware) - we will continue down the traditional marketing cycle it takes to launch a new product. During this journey, we need to wisely spend our time and budget. Any advice regarding which trade shows are best for krippit to attend?
